An Old-Fashioned Girl is a novel by Louisa May Alcott.

An Old Fashioned Girl Louisa May Alcott 9781541279889 Books

This is a sweet, victorian era story, appropriate for any age girl. A bit outdated in outlook, I don't know if any child over the age of 10 will be able to relate anymore to the way girls were treated and reared to behave back then. Alcott was a very good writer, hence the 4 stars; the rose-colored looking glass view of how women were expected to act and were treated-----not so much. Still, even it tweens and teens won't agree with the authors's world view, they can relate to the likable characters and get a sense of what it was like back then. That's a good thing.

An Old Fashioned Girl Louisa May Alcott 9781541279889 Books Reviews

I absolutely adore this book; it's my favorite Louisa May Alcott book next to Little Women. However, this particular copy left much to be desired. The dimensions of the book itself are too large to read comfortably and the print is VERY small. And I've counted many typos and improper punctuation. There is a space between each contraction ("was 'nt" instead of "wasn't"). That probably won't bother most people, but I thought I'd point it out. Plus, the cover art does not match the main character at all. I love this story and highly recommend it, but please find a different copy!
The book written by LMA is one of my favorites -- but this edition of it is awful. It is far too large to be read comfortably, and, while the image on the front is one of the illustrations taken from an earlier edition, there are none of the other lovely illustrations inside this edition. I was stunned when it was delivered -- it never occurred to me to look at what the measurements were. If I could have found a different edition than this one, I would have taken it. I am not pleased with this edition.
Louisa May Alcott's classic "An Old-Fashioned Girl" is an engaging period romance disguised as a morality tale, and evidence, if the reader needs it, that human nature hasn't changed very much since this novel was first published in 1870.

The story is told in two parts. In the first portion, fourteen year old Polly Milton comes to Boston to stay with her friend Fanny Shaw, who lives the exciting if rather unfulfilling life of a young socialite. Polly, a shy country mouse in the big city, feels out of place among Fanny's wealthy and fashionable circle. However, she makes up for her lack of social standing with her good manners, modesty, and her domestic skills, which endear her to the Shaw household. Not least, she is a good influence on Fanny's rather wild brother Tom, who comes to care about her good opinion.

The novel jumps ahead six years, as a twenty year old Polly returns to Boston for the unfashionable purpose of making her own living as a music teacher. Polly will make a niche for herself through hard work and self-denial. However, a maturing Polly has become attractive to men, and she will find herself in a romantic dilemma between two suitors. One will offer the poverty-stricken Polly the comfort of wealth with friendship; the other the possibility of genuine passion. In addition, Polly will be called upon to assist the Shaws through a series of family crises.

Louisa May Alcott relies on some traditional plot devices, but the real entertainment is her superb telling of the story, including the moral that young men may be as gallant as their women require them to be. "An Old-Fashioned Girl" is highly recommended to fans of Louisa May Alcott's many novels.
This is an old favorite. I always liked it better than Little Women whose characters and outcomes I was never quite satisfied. I sympathized with Polly being raised by conservative parents as I was and then not quite knowing how to fit in the great wide world. I always enjoyed that it's a glimpse into the life of a sweet but imperfect girl and then fast forwards to adulthood and romance.
Louisa May Alcott's durable classic "An Old-Fashioned Girl" is an engaging morality tale wrapped around a period romance, and evidence, if the reader needs it, that young people haven't changed very much in their essentials since this novel was first published in 1870.

The story is told in two parts. In the first portion, fourteen year old Polly Milton comes to Boston to stay with her wealthy friend Fanny Shaw, who lives the frenetic if somewhat empty life of a budding socialite. Polly, the classic poor country mouse in the big city, makes up for her lack of sophistication with modesty, a good heart, and a good example for Fanny and her siblings Tom and Maud. By the time she ends her summer visit, she has made a good impression on every member of the Shaw household.

The novel then jumps ahead six years, as a twenty-year old Polly returns to make her own living as a music teacher. She is welcomed by the Shaws, whose children are wrestling with adult challenges. Polly makes a niche for herself through hard work, but will find herself on the horns of a difficult romantic dilemma betweent two men, and called upon to assist a Shaw family in crisis.

As with many period novels, Louisa May Alcott follows a traditional plot formula. However, the real entertainment is in her superb telling of the story. "An Old-Fashioned Girl" is very highly recommended to fans of her novels.
I am an Alcott lover since age 10, and this has always been my favorite of her books. I am 62 now and I still include this in my "Read it once a year" books!
